NBR, EPDM or FKM? Choosing Pump Seals for the Liquid and Temperature

NBR, EPDM and FKM suit different liquids and temperatures. Check the actual compound, swelling, compression and adjacent materials before approving a substitution.

Sealing rings of the same size can carry different prices when supplied in NBR, EPDM or FKM. Choosing the most expensive material is not a complete engineering decision. Establish whether the part seals water, oil or an interface between fluids, together with temperature, compression and movement. Price cannot establish compatibility with a particular position in a pump.

Identify the actual sealing function

NBR is nitrile rubber, EPDM is ethylene propylene diene rubber, and FKM is fluorocarbon rubber. They can appear in static rings, lip seals or the secondary seals of a mechanical face-seal assembly. The mating faces may use ceramic, carbon materials or silicon carbide. An FKM seal description does not mean that elastomer performs the same function as the face materials.

Each family contains different compounds, hardnesses, curing systems and application grades. Recording only NBR or FKM is therefore incomplete. Colour is not a reliable material identity check. Specify a controlled compound or equivalent definition and an approved substitution process.

Understand the common trade-offs

MaterialUseful application directionParticular limits to check
NBRMany mineral-oil sealing duties and a practical cost balanceWater temperature, ozone, ageing and chemical compatibility
EPDMMany water, weathering and selected hot-water applicationsGenerally unsuitable for mineral-oil exposure
FKMMany oil and suitable high-temperature chemical dutiesHot water, steam, low temperatures and chemistry depend on compound

This table identifies questions rather than approving a seal. FKM is not resistant to every liquid. EPDM's usefulness in water does not establish suitability for an oil chamber or an oil-containing lubricant.

Different positions may need different compounds

Where an oil chamber exists, a seal may encounter the pumped liquid on one side and a lubricating fluid on the other. Cable entries, covers and shaft interfaces also experience different conditions. Replacing every ring with EPDM because the external liquid is clean water can overlook internal oil contact.

Conversely, an NBR arrangement validated for a mild application cannot automatically be carried into higher temperatures or different chemistry. List each sealing position, the fluids on both sides, temperature range and exposure time. Select compound and construction together. The relevant temperature is the seal's actual condition, not merely the surrounding air temperature.

Correct material does not remove installation requirements

Groove geometry, compression, stretch, surface finish, burrs and assembly lubricant all influence sealing. Compression set can reduce long-term contact; excessive swelling can alter clearances or increase friction; shrinkage and hardening can also compromise the boundary. Increasing hardness alone does not resolve every failure mechanism.

A material substitution may require different tolerances, friction assessment or assembly practice. A lubricant accepted for one compound may not suit another. Changing a three-letter material code in a purchasing list is not evidence that the original manufacturing and test requirements remain applicable.

Validate the actual exposure

Retain material identity and batch traceability, using suitable identification where necessary. Assess changes in volume, hardness, mass and function in the intended fluid, concentration and temperature. Coupon immersion can help screen compounds, but the assembled seal still requires relevant operating validation.

An elastomer test specimen's temperature capability is not the complete pump's allowable water temperature. Bearing lubricant, cables, electrical insulation and housing can impose other limits. Drinking-water, food or other special uses also need application-specific evidence, not an assumption based on a material name or food-grade lubricant.

The purchasing objective is a seal that maintains its intended geometry and function throughout the defined exposure. That is more meaningful than selecting the most impressive-sounding family.

Associate approval with the actual sealing position rather than extending one successful result to every elastomer component in the pump.

Questions buyers ask

Does FKM always outlast NBR? No. Compare it under the relevant liquid, temperature and construction.

Does EPDM suit every submersible pump because it suits water? No. Check internal oils, lubricants and all other contact fluids.

Are same-size rings interchangeable? Not automatically. Compound, hardness, tolerances, assembly and validation remain part of the specification.
