Two suppliers may differ by only a few cents FOB, yet one produces a much higher landed cost. The reason is often carton cube, pack quantity, gross-weight limits, pallet pattern, unused container space and transport damage. Procurement should expand unit price into transport resources per pump and saleable units received.
What drives the result
A container may cube out before it weighs out, or the reverse. Stronger packaging improves protection, but a small increase on every carton dimension compounds into material volume. Floor loading maximises quantity while palletising improves handling but consumes space. Over-compressing the pack can make pumps, adapters and floats load against each other, raising damage and after-sales expense.
An illustrative way to check
Suppose quote A is USD 0.30 cheaper per unit but its pack cube is fifteen percent larger, reducing units per container. Allocate ocean freight, destination charges, inland delivery, duty basis, reshipment and unsaleable damage to each saleable unit. Quote A may no longer be cheaper. The figures illustrate the model, not a market price.
Translate pump carton cube landed cost into a signed record before the purchase order, not an argument at final inspection. Define sample identity, measurement boundary, instruments and units, stabilisation conditions, decision rule, retest method and disposition of a failure. The record should trace to the exact model, BOM revision and production lot. Photographs can preserve condition but cannot replace numerical evidence. If either party proposes a different acceptance method, document the risk changed by that revision before approving it.
Actions for the site or purchasing team
- Obtain verified outer carton dimensions, net and gross mass, pack quantity and an actual loading plan.
- Calculate floor-loaded and palletised cases separately, including unit count, weight, handling and warehouse fit.
- Evaluate stack, vibration or drop risk on the real pack and record both cosmetic and functional damage.
- Measure saleable units received rather than cartons signed for, and feed damage cost into supplier comparison.
- Recalculate loading and landed cost whenever packaging changes.
Limits and application boundary
Freight, duties and loading limits vary by route, date and jurisdiction. Use current forwarder and customs data; this article makes no fixed cost or loading promise.
Frequently asked questions
Is the smallest carton always best? No. Protection, accessory clearance and manufacturability still matter.
Is palletising always more expensive? It uses space but may reduce handling damage and labour; compare total cost.
Can container quantity be calculated by simple cube division? Only as an estimate; orientation, voids, weight and door clearance also matter.
