Pump selection basics
How do I choose a submersible pump for a flooded basement?
Start with the liquid condition, required flow at total working head, hose or pipe route, available space and control method. Then compare those conditions with the pump’s documented Q–H curve, solids limit, residual-water level and electrical version.

What pump specifications matter most for a flooded basement?
The most useful specifications are flow at the real total working head, liquid/solids limits, residual-water level, discharge size, control method, cable length, electrical supply and duty/protection information. Qmax or wattage alone is not enough.

FAQ topic
Flow, head and real performance
Why does my submersible pump deliver less than the advertised flow during basement drainage?
Published Qmax is normally near the low-head end of the Q–H curve. Static lift plus friction from hose length, internal diameter, fittings, valves and restrictions increases total head, so installed flow is usually lower.

- Why does my submersible pump deliver less than the advertised flow during rainwater transfer?
- Why does my submersible pump deliver less than the advertised flow during garden irrigation?
- Why does my submersible pump deliver less than the advertised flow during construction dewatering?
How does vertical lift affect pump flow in basement drainage?
As total head increases, available flow moves down the pump’s Q–H curve. Start with static lift from water level to discharge point, then add flow-dependent losses from the hose or pipe system.

Hose, discharge and fittings
What hose size should I use with a basement pump?
Use a hose diameter that matches the pump discharge as closely as practical and the flow you need. Reducing immediately to a much smaller hose increases friction loss and can cut flow significantly.

- What hose size should I use with a rainwater-tank pump?
- What hose size should I use with a garden transfer pump?
- What hose size should I use with a dirty-water pump?
Can I connect a garden hose to a basement pump?
Sometimes, if the correct adaptor is available and the system can accept the extra restriction. A typical garden hose is much smaller than many submersible-pump outlets, so delivered flow may be far below the pump’s headline rating.

Low-level and residual-water drainage
Why does my pump leave water behind on a basement floor?
Every pump has a minimum practical suction / residual-water level. Inlet geometry, control switch level, uneven surfaces and loss of prime near the end of draining can all leave water behind.
- Why does my pump leave water behind on a swimming pool floor?
- Why does my pump leave water behind on a flat tank?
- Why does my pump leave water behind on a garage or patio?
- Why does my pump leave water behind on a shallow sump?
What does residual water level mean for a basement floor?
It is the approximate water depth left when the pump can no longer continue normal drainage under the stated test arrangement. Real remaining water can be higher on uneven floors or if the pump tilts or draws air.

FAQ topic
Float switches and automatic control
Why does the float switch not start the pump in a narrow sump pit?
Check that the float can rise freely, is not trapped against a wall or cable, and reaches the required switching position. Also verify power supply and the selected manual / automatic mode if the model has one.
- Why does the float switch not start the pump in a basement drainage pit?
- Why does the float switch not start the pump in a rainwater tank?
- Why does the float switch not start the pump in a pool cover area?
- Why does the float switch not start the pump in a utility drainage tray?
Why does the float switch not stop the pump in a narrow sump pit?
The float may be jammed, weighted by the cable, obstructed by debris or unable to fall to the stop position. Disconnect power before inspecting the control and follow the model manual.

- Why does the float switch not stop the pump in a utility drainage tray?
FAQ topic
Dirty water, solids and debris
Can a dirty-water submersible pump handle floodwater with leaves?
It depends on the documented particle/soft-solids passage and the debris itself. A soft-solids rating does not establish abrasion resistance or suitability for sand, stones, fibrous material, sewage or dense slurry.
- Can a dirty-water submersible pump handle a muddy garden pit?
- Can a dirty-water submersible pump handle a construction trench?
- Can a dirty-water submersible pump handle a pond bottom?
- Can a dirty-water submersible pump handle a dirty rainwater tank?
What solids size should I look for when pumping floodwater with leaves?
Estimate the largest soft particles likely to reach the inlet and compare them with the model’s documented passage size. Also consider concentration and abrasion, which are not described by particle diameter alone.

- What solids size should I look for when pumping a construction trench?
- What solids size should I look for when pumping a pond bottom?

FAQ topic
Pool, spa and tank draining
Can I use a submersible pump to drain an above-ground pool?
Yes, when the water treatment or chemistry, temperature, debris level and required head are within the selected pump’s documented limits. Keep electrical connections dry and protected, and use a drainage route permitted locally.
- Can I use a submersible pump to drain an in-ground pool?
- Can I use a submersible pump to drain a hot tub or spa?
- Can I use a submersible pump to drain a water-storage tank?
- Can I use a submersible pump to drain a decorative pond basin?
How long will it take to drain an above-ground pool?
Estimate the water volume, then divide by expected delivered flow at the real total head and discharge setup. Qmax gives only an optimistic lower-bound drain time because lift and friction reduce installed flow.

FAQ topic
Basement and flood drainage
What kind of submersible pump should I use for a finished basement?
Match the pump to water cleanliness, debris size, required flow at lift, available pit / floor space and whether automatic operation is needed. Floodwater with debris may need a dirty-water family; final cleanup may favor a low-level clean-water pump.
- What kind of submersible pump should I use for a cellar?
- What kind of submersible pump should I use for a window well?
- What kind of submersible pump should I use for a crawl-space sump?
- What kind of submersible pump should I use for a garage after flooding?
How fast should a pump drain a finished basement?
The required flow rate depends on water volume and continuing inflow. Choose for the flow needed at the actual total working head and outlet arrangement, not the pump’s Qmax headline.

Rainwater, garden and irrigation transfer
Can I use a submersible pump with a rain barrel?
Yes if the water condition, required pressure / head and connection arrangement match the pump. For sprinklers and restrictive hoses, check the Q–H curve because high flow at low head does not guarantee adequate pressure at the outlet.
- Can I use a submersible pump with a large rainwater tank?
- Can I use a submersible pump with a garden hose?
- Can I use a submersible pump with a small sprinkler zone?
- Can I use a submersible pump with a greenhouse water tank?
How do I choose pump size for a rain barrel?
Estimate required flow and total head, including height difference and hose / pipe friction. Then select a pump whose curve provides that flow with margin at the real operating point.

FAQ topic
Electrical supply, duty and safe operation
Can a submersible pump run dry during home drainage?
Only if the exact model is explicitly rated for that condition. Thermal protection is not the same as dry-run approval. Avoid intentional dry running and keep the inlet adequately submerged / supplied according to the manual.
- Can a submersible pump run dry during pool draining?
- Can a submersible pump run dry during rainwater transfer?
- Can a submersible pump run dry during garden irrigation?
- Can a submersible pump run dry during jobsite dewatering?
Can a submersible pump run continuously during home drainage?
Continuous operation depends on the selected model’s permitted operating duty, cooling conditions and operating point. A thermal protector can stop an overheated motor, but it is not a normal on/off control.

Troubleshooting and maintenance
Why is a basement pump running but not moving water?
Check water level, inlet blockage, hose kinks, closed valves, excessive lift, trapped air and whether the pump is positioned correctly. Disconnect power before clearing the inlet or handling the pump.

- Why is a rainwater pump running but not moving water?
- Why is a garden transfer pump running but not moving water?
- Why is a dirty-water pump running but not moving water?
How do I know if a basement pump is air-locked?
A pump may run with little or no discharge after air becomes trapped in the hydraulic path. Repositioning, fully submerging the inlet and following the model’s priming / venting instructions can help; do not drill or modify the pump unless the manufacturer specifies it.
